Discover Startup Storytelling Secrets: The Dejargonizer Podcast Season 1 - 5 Challenges Solved
From Complex to Clear: How We Tackled 5 Deep Tech Storytelling Challenges in the newly launched Dejargonizer podcast
Launched mid May, The Dejargonizer Podcast took on 5 tough startup storytelling challenges.
We cracked these deeptech startup storytelling challenges by combining strategic positioning, compelling messaging, and innovative sound engineering to "audiolize" complex concepts.
Simplifying Complexity: The Final Frontier
In the episode "Tiny Space Startup Has a Galaxy-Size Vision, Starting With Earth (Helios)",we faced the challenge of simplifying the complex world of space exploration and decarbonization for the average listener. The episode highlighted the ambitious vision of Helios, a startup aiming to revolutionize the steel industry and produce liquid Oxygen propellant on the moon.
To bridge the gap between the grand vision of Helios and the reality of being a small startup with only 27 employees, we drew parallels between the challenges faced by Helios and those faced by any startup: securing funding, overcoming technical hurdles, and scaling operations. By framing the story in this relatable context, we made the seemingly distant and complex world of space exploration relatable and understandable for all listeners.
To further engage the audience, we incorporated historical recordings of JFK's famous speech about going to the moon, emphasizing the audacious nature of space exploration. In addition, we used sound effects to audiolize rocket launches, chemical processes, and the texture of moon dust. These audio elements brought the story to life, immersing the listener in the fascinating world of Helios and the new commercial space age.
Unveiling a Hidden World With an ex-Spy as a Guest
In the episode "A Former Secret Agent On How to Uncover Hidden Hackers (Opora)", we faced the challenge of demystifying the clandestine world of cyber intelligence. Our guest, Noam Jolles-Ichner, a former cyber spy for Israel's Shin Bet, was naturally reticent. The solution? Storytelling, analogies, and humor to lighten things up! We journeyed into this covert world, drawing parallels between tracking terrorists at airports and spotting patterns in hackers' behavior, making the abstract concept of cyber intelligence tangible and engaging.
Championing the Little Guy
In the episode "How Small Businesses Can Get Big Cyber Protection (Cynomi)", the challenge was to make the seemingly-niche topic of cybersecurity for small and medium sized businesses engaging for a broader audience.
The solution was to position Cynomi as the David to the cyber industry's Goliath. By democratizing access to an unaffordable Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for companies of all sizes and smaller budgets through a Virtual CISO (vCISO), Cynomi was portrayed as the underdog challenging the status quo, giving real cyber protection to millions of small companies.
This narrative of the small startup taking on the big industry giants and giving small businesses a fighting chance against rampant cybercrime, made the story engaging and relatable, while also highlighting Cynomi's unique value proposition.
Providing Context to Complex Crypto Concepts and Positioning the Innovator
The episode "Crypto's Lost Control. Now You Can Take It Back (ZenGo)" posed the challenge of demystifying complex cryptocurrency concepts and distinguishing ZenGo from the industry's bad actors. The solution was a blend of historical context, real-world examples, and creative storytelling.
We traced the history of cryptocurrency and used Turkey's situation as a case study, making the intricate world of cryptocurrency more digestible. ZenGo was positioned as an innovator prioritizing user control and security, standing out from the crowd.
To illustrate ZenGo's unique wallet security mechanism, we used the analogy of a vault, audiolized with sound effects. This tangible representation helped visualize ZenGo's approach, making the episode engaging and informative.
Clearing Away Negativity to Explore the Potential of Emerging Technologies
In the episode "Don't Throw Out the Blockchain Baby With the Crypto Bathwater (Applied Blockchain)", the challenge was to delve into the potential of blockchain technology beyond the cryptocurrency hype. The solution was a direct approach: tackling the blockchain's tarnished image head-on, acknowledging the skepticism, and then pivoting to its transformative potential.
We highlighted real-world applications of blockchain, such as Shell's use of it to manage financial instruments and the United Nations' use for refugee fund transfers. By focusing on these practical applications, we were able to shift the narrative, showcasing the blockchain as a tool for positive change and innovation.
We cracked these deeptech startup storytelling challenges by combining strategic positioning, compelling messaging, and innovative sound engineering to "audiolize" complex concepts. I hope you join us on this storytelling journey!
